3 MONTHT,Y WEATHER REVIEW. CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA FOR JANUARY, 1911 DISTRICT No. 1, NORTH ATLANTIC STATES. WILFORD M. WILSON, District Editor. GENERAL SUMMARY. The weather of January, 1911, was of widely varied character in different parts of the district, the prevailing tem eratures being quite near the normal in some of the the greater part of the district, however, the inoiitli was remarkably warm, the average temperatures at inost stations having been esceeded only two or three times January of the last 35 years. The month was able also for its freedom from severe stornis and for the unusual scarcity of snowfall. During most of the nionth barometric depressions of moderate intensity moved in quick succession over the Northeastern States, or through the eastern C'niiaclim Provinces, causing somewhat more than the usual cloucli- ness, frequent precipitation, nioclerately high t eniperntures, and much changeable weather, though cold waves were fewer and inuch less severe than are generally experienced in the first month of tlie year. I n New .Jersey it was the first January since IS91 without teniperatures below zero somewhere in the State. -4s far north 11s Alassachusetts few stations reported temperatures lower than zero. This eculiarity was less marked in the northern part of the (P istrict, but even in the mountain regions of the northern New England States and in the Adirondacks, where, during the coldest eriods, there were temperatures month were somewhat higher than in most recent years. The storms of the month were not of unusual character, though practically all were attended by sufficient rises in temperature to prevent tlie extensive occurrence of snow- fall. There was a marked deficiency of precipitation in the northern part of the district and a coiisiclerable excess in the southern. The daily aniounts, however, were quite uniform and comparatively light in nearly every case, producing only moderate effects upon the streams. nort E ern sections, but very unseasonal elsewhere. Over reniar in ranging from 15' to 30' \ elow zero, the minima for the TEMPERATURE. The avera e tern erature for the district was 32.7', or about 4.2' a B P ove t ie normal, and ranged from 25.2" in New England to 39" in Virginia. The mean temyera- tures for individual stations were less than 15' in northern Maine, but esceeded -10' in some parts of Virginia. The high average temperature was due to the continued prevn- lence of mild weather with little or no interruption by cold waves, such as usually follow the principal storms of midwinter. The weather, however, was decidedly change- able, and the variation in temperature froiii clay to day was fully up to the average, though the extremes for the nionth were generally well within the records of recent years Temperatures above GO" did not occur in New York or in any of the New England States, while tempera- tures below zero were not recorded at tiny of the stations in West Virginia, hlaryland, Delaware, Virginia, or New Jersey. The highest temperature reported in the district was 76" at La Plata, Md., on the 14th, and the lowest was -33" at Houlton, Me., on the 17th and at Presque Isle, Me., on the 18th. The mean temperature was above normal at every sta- tion in the district, but tlie departure from the normal was only 0.2' at Ruiiiforcl Falls, Me., and at several other of tlie most northern stations it was less than 2". There was i t n average excess of 4 O to 7" or more over practically all the district south of the latitude of Albany, N. Y. The cold wave that passed over the central part of the district on the 31st of December dominated tlie iiorth- eastern sections on tlie 1st of January, but was followetl by a very rapid change to warmer weather resulting in the highest teiiiperaturex 'of the month in many sections on the nest clay. The wnriii period ended on the 4th and wis followed Ly :I cold period of about three days, which was not severe, except in the northern part of the district. Froin the Sth to the 14th tlie weather was generally mild, and at ninny stations in h1aryl:tntl and Pennsylvmia tlie highest temperatures of the month occurred on the 14th. The most ini ortuiit cold period lasted from the 15th t o the 1Sth or 1% Y 1, although the lowest temperatures for the month were recorded at n majority of the stations on the 5th. Decidedly the lowest daily mean temperatures occurred on the 16th and 17th, when in the northern parts of New Hanipshire and Maine the maximum temperatures were below 10' niid in soiiie instances below zero. After the 19th the temperature averaged somewhat above the norind, hut the weather over the northern part of tlie ciis- trict was very chnngettble, niicl temperatures below zero occurred on several clutes. One of the warmest clays of tlie month W'NS tlie Sith, when tlie ininimuni temperatures were generally above freezing, esce t in Maine and the mont, and New York, while the niasiinum temperatures ranged from about -10' in southern New England to more than GO' in the southern part of the district. The rnilcl weather ended on the 30th andl a decided change t o colder occurred on the 31st. mountainous sections of northern x ew Hampshire, Ver- PRECIPITATION, The average precipitation for the district was 3.69 inches, which is about 0.58 inch above the normal but considerably less than the average for January last year. The distribution was remarkably uneven for the district as it whole, the section averages increasing from 2.73 inches in New England to 5.59 inches in West Virginia. In the former section there was an average deficiency of 1.06 inch, while in tlie latter there was an average excess of 2.56 inches. The greatest amount for the month was 7.62 inches a t Bayard, W. Va., and the least was 0.83 inch a t West Berne, N. T. I n New Tork and New Jersey there WRS an average deficiency of less than JANUARY, 1911. MONTHLY WEATHER REVIEW. 3 half an inch, but farther south and west there was a general excess. Though the preci itation in the south- that over the northeastern art, the variation from section stations in the average, except in In those States there was a beginning on the 10th and during which only light ancl scattered precipitation occurred. In general, the precipitation occurred largely in two periods, the one extending from the 2d to the 9th and the other from the 26th to the 30th. During the intervening period there was no precipitation at niany of the stations in northern Maine, and only slight amounts elsewhere in that State, but the precipitation of this eriocl increased gradually toward the southwest. hiroughout the southern and central parts of the dis- trict there was moderate to heavy precipitation between the 13th and 15th ancl on the 21st or 23d. There were no severe general storms during the month, nor were there any instances of excessive precipitation except at one station, Alfred, N. Y., where 3 inches of rain occurred on the 23th. Amounts exceeding 1 inch occurred in many localities in the southern part of the district on the 3d, l4th, and 37th or 28th; but, in general, the greatest aniount for any 24-hour period was consitler- ably less than 1 inch. western parts of the district was a E out twice as great as to section was very gradua P and the amounts recorded a t The frequency of SNOWFALL. The snowfall of the northern States was exceptionally light, being about the least for any January in the last 20 years. Actual computation shows the average aniount for the stations in New Tork to be riiuch less than that, for any other January since 1900, and i t appears thnt it is also less than that of any other January since the establishment of the State weather service in 18S9. In northern Maine the precipitation was netirly all in the form of snow, the total for the month being somewhat more than 20 inches. But in the other States there was generally less than 5 inches of snow, escept in sonie of the mountain regions. Snow fell on numerous dates in northern New Tork and New England, but from Rlassa- chusetts soutliward the number of clays with snow w-ns ewe tionally small, while the total aniount for nearly one- r ourth of the area clicl not exceed 1 inch. Only a trace of snow was observed during the month a t several stations even as far north as Massachusetts. In the Southern States the only snowfall of consequence occurred on the 32tl. wlien as much tis 4 inches was recorded in many localities in Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and West Virginia. At, Hammonton, N. J., the snowfall of this storm amounted to 7 inches, which is probably tlie greatest amount recorded in the district for any 24-hour period. In the iiorthern part of the district the ground w m generally well covered with snow until about the loth, but in other parts of the district the amount o f snow on ground was unusually small a t nearly all times during the month. RIVER CONDITIONS. The river stages remaiiiecl fairly near tlie nornial in most parts of the district throughout the month. Three periods of moderately high water were, however, noticeable. At the beginning of the month the rains and melting snow of the last few days of December caused rather high stages in the streams of t'lie Delaware and Hudson systems. A second general rise occurred between the 13t8h and 17th, ancl in tlie Susquehanna system was of more im ortance than elsewhere. In the Harrisburg The high wtiter was due to ice gorges rather than to heavy prec.ipitation or rapid thawing of the snow, as may be seen from the following taken from the report of the official in charge, local ofice Weather Bureau a t Harris- burg, Pa.: The ice which broke on the headwaters of the West Branch above Renovo on the night of Decenibrr 29, 1910, moved ~10wly down and orged near Pine until January 14, when, as a result of moderately keavy rains am1 warnirr wrather over the upper West Branch, the river rose cleridetlly and all the bottom land hetween Pine antl Lock Haven was under water on the night of the 14th. The ice above the dam at Williamsport broke about 10 a. ni., January 15, and the river there rose steadily till about 3 p. ni., reaching a maximum stage of 19 feet, or only 1 foot below the f l o i ~l stage. The third rise of the rivers occurred at the end of the month. Rains of from two to five tlavs duration occurred over the district, niuch snow was nieltecl, and there was a marked rise in the rivers. This was nt,tended by much outflowing ice, but no serious damage was reported. district t Y ie river rose nearly to flood stage 011 the 15th. BIISCELLANEOUS. A rather severe windstorm occurred in the mountain regions of Virginia on t,he Sth and 9th. The wind attained a velocity of 74 miles er hour or more, and, according to tlie statement of %r. Ernest Nothnagel, cooperative observer a t Staunton, 17a., blew with suf- ficient force to rock houses, uproot trees, and unroof moderately substantinl buildings. The damage was confined mainly to Augusta, Rockingham, and Yhenan- tloah counties. hhch foggy weather prevailed along the middle Atlantic coast region between the 3tl antl the 9th, causing serious interference with navigation. On the 10th many of the smaller vessels of the coast, wise trade off Massa- chusetts: experienced great dificulty owing to high winds, and some were tlamagetl or tlestroj-ed, while a number of seamen lost their lives. The average amount of sunshine for the month was 122 hours, or slightly reater than thnt for January, 1910, in ioost, pwts of the clistrict. The highest percentage of sunshine recorded was 53 a t Mount Went ier, Va., and the lowest was 23 a t Portland, Me.; but at no other station did the percentage fall below 34. The average for all stntioiis was 41, which ih 6 per cent, less than the average for December, 1910. The number of clays with '20 per cent or less of the possible sunshine averaged 14; the number with 80 er cent or more varied from 5 to 10, except a t Eastport, &e., where i t was 0. hut there was a de % ciencj- a s compared with the normal 4 30 3 3 2lt 3t- 3- 2 12 3 2 3 2 t 3 !I 3 a t - 2 2 2 - !1 2 - a t - 3 - !1 RIONTHL1- WEATHER REVIEW.
