102 MONTHLY WEATHER REVIEW. CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA FOR JANUARY, 191 1. JANUARY, 19 1 1 DISTRICT No. 9, COLORADO VALLEY. FREDERICK H. BRANDENBURQ, District Forecaster. QENERAL SUMMARY The temperature conditions during January were much milder than the average, despite tlie severe aiitl esteiisive cold snap that set in at the heginning of the iiioiitli and lasted almost to tlie end of the first tlecatle. The fall in temperature was gradual, not al)rupt, as was the case on the east aiid op osite side of the C'oiitinentnl Divide, the eastern to the western slope does not occur very often, for most cold waves are too sliallow- to cross even the lower passes in tlie mount ains. As invtiriahly happeiis in such cases, there was n settling or slow movement of the cold from high to low elevations. The last two decades were unusually mild. except on tlie 22cl ancl ?:%I in the mountain region of the northern part of the tlis- trict, ancl rather unsettled, with t i n excebs of cloudiness. Practically all tlie precipitation of tlie month occurred during this period, much of it being in the foriii of rain at high elevations. Precipitation wtis general 011 the 10th and 11th; another wet period, but more limited in area, was from the 15th to 17th. On the 31st precipita- tion was general, whilr in Arizona and New Mesic0 it continued until tlie 25th, when the area with precipita- tion shifted to the northern part of the district. Heavy precipitation in northern and central Arizona on tlie 10th and 11th caused a moderate freshet in the Salt, Vertle, and Gila Rivers, delaying traffic for a few clays. Water for irrigation is now plentiful in Arizona. In soutli- western New Mesico the drought has been relieved, Init tlie outlook for irrigation water lias not been improved. where it was first P elt. The spreatling of cold air from TEMPERATURE. The mean of the 135 stations reporting temier t tlie means and departures were : Tl'esterii Wyoming, 16.S0, + 2.3'; western Colorado, 25.5', + 6.3'; eastern Utah, 31.2', +7'; western New Mexico, 39', f5.3'; Ari- zona, 48.2", + 3.2'; ant1 southeastern Nevada, 42.9'. Tlesfcrn IQonLing.-There is lesir mow than usual a t the head- waters of the Green River. An average is reported from the Newfork district, but there is a decided deficiency in the Big Sandy diatrict. Tt'esteru ( 'olorcido.-During January weather contlitiona were more favorxble for the streanis of the western than for the streams of the eastern slope. Over the greater part of tlie drainage area of the Tampa, White, Grand, Gunnibon, and San Jti:tn the precipitation during the month mas in excess of the normal for January. For the Grand and (iunniqon, each 25 inches on an avenge, the depth is about the same as a year ago, while fur the Yanipa and White there is a deficiency of 12 inches, and fur the San Juan a deficiency of 10 inches. Although some very low tempera- tures were noted, high day temper'itureir were a feature, facilitating the settling of the snow. Rain, an unusual thing in C'olorado in January ex en at low altitiicles, was reported from a number of hiqh-level sL1tion.s Eastern Utah-As a rule there was 1e.s R I ~O W on the watersheds of the Green and the C'olor'ido than a yt=ar ago, and less than t h ~ average 3111011I1 t . Ilkstern A'ero ,W..rico.-Heavy rains fell nver the upper waterahed of the Sau Juan, nielting the snow from the lower levels and causing high water. The lower reaches of the stream were without snowfall. Snow was generally lacking over the Gila. San Francisco, and Mimbres watersheds. drizonn.-The suowfall during January was great1 deficient. The warm rains of the 10th and 11th caused a ra )id nie&ing of the mow covering between the 7,500 and 5.500 foot dtitudea. Unless heavy snows fall by March 20, there will be a shortage of water during the summer months. C'onsider:tble tlriftiiiq occurred. 104 2 MONTHLY WEATHER REVIEW.
