DISTRICT No. 11, CALIFORNIA. Prof. ALEXANDER C;. MCADIE, District Editor. 4 i . 5 43.9 4:. 7 47.8 41.9 45.7 GENERAL SUMMARY. January, 191 1, was a Inonth of unusu:tlly heavy precil'i- tation in all parts of California. In tlie central portion of tlie State the amounts were in genersl about three times tlie normal, while in the s( iuthern and northern counties they were about twice the norriinl. A note- wortliy feature w~ts the 1)re:tking of the dry perit id, which l i d esis t ed p t c t ically since tlie spring of the preceding year. As hits been sliown in other reports, tlie year 1910 was one of coiiipar>itively little precipitn- tion. With the exception of tlie rains itnd siiows of the first few months, the year will go down in history as one of the driest known. The close of tlie year w i t s plie- nomenally dry and there w :~ less risihle witt er in the usual places of supply than liitcl been known for nitmy years. The snow cover was restricted nncl there were many bare spots a t elevations which hitherto had alw\.:tys been covered a t that period. Tlie run-off was the lightest for any December of wliich there is record in this State and there was general amiety aiiiong water users lest the sliortilge should continue. All these conditic )ns were changed during the first inontli of the new year. Begin- ning with tlie moderate rain of Jmuttry 9 ancl a rather light siioTvfitll in the mnuntainq, there ensued a periotl Iasting practically till the end of the month, when the storms contributed daily lnrge amounts of water. At tlie lower levels tlie rainfall in the central portion of the State was the heaviest known since 1863. At Iiiglicr levels the depth of the snow steadily increased, niid ~1 - though owing to warm rains there was ritpid iiielting tint1 an excessive run-off, there wns at the close of tlie month more snow on the ground in tlie Sierrit Nevndn than had been known for many years. Strangely enough, there was very little snow hi tlie iiiountains of southern Cali- fornia. Elsewhere snowfall reports are given in iiiore detail. There were no features of special interest connected with the temperature conditions. Well-marked foehn effects were experienced Jitnuctry 4, 5 , and 6 in the sections south of tlie Sierra Madre. After- noon temperatures a t Los Angeles varied from SO to SS", and even a t coast stations, like San Diego, afternoon readings were as high as 74'. During the first week of January the pressure clistri- hution was of the dry tJype ancl tlie prevailing movement of the lower air WAS from the Great Basin westwtrd over tlie mountains and down the western slopes into Cali- fornia. At the beginning of the second week there was a decided change. An extensive depression moved in from the North Pacific. Tlie lower air niovement was from the south and rain began to fall in the northern counties. The condition continued and the type devel- oped into that of a well-marked "wet" character. The mi.. ................... i9nR ..................... 1907.. ................... 190s.. ................... 19 ...................... 1910 ..................... 1911 ..................... rain area spread, nnd, ats stated above, the accuiiiulated precipitation at, tlie end of the month broke the record nt iiiany points. An interesting table of rainfall, given elsewhere, slit nvs tlint in tlie mount8nin sections t'lie niontlily totals dit1 not equal or sur )ass those of J~iiuttrj-, level.
