170 MONTHLY WEATHER REVIEW. FEBRUABY, 19 11 CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA FOR FEBRUARY, 191 1. DISTRICT No. 3, SOdTH ATLANTIC AND EAST GULF STATES. CHARLES F. VON HERRYANN, District Edit,or. GENERAL SUMMARY. Very clist, inctire climatic features c.liara.c~t,erizetl t,lie mont,li of Febrmry t,lii*ougliout t,lie district. Despite the nia.rkec1 cold wave at, the beginning of the second clecacle, h i n g which t,lie t,enipernture fell fielow freezing over tlie dist, ric.t, to the Gulf and dt,lantic cottsts and sout1iwa.rd int,o Floricla, hhe niont,li as 11. whole ma.s est.reniely warm, the excess in teniperatme at indiviclunl stations ranging froni 1 O in southern Floritla to over 11 " in northern Ala- bama and port, ions of the Mississippi area. The only previous February companthle in this respect with tlie current month was February, 1890, wliicli was even warmer. I n South Ca,rolina, February, 1909, mas slight,ly warmer J and in Florida Fehrua.ry, 1 897, wa,s warmer t,lian the current moiith. The St,at,e mean temperature for Georgia was 2" higher t.lian tlie previous highest record for February, and with tlie single exception of January, 1907, no wint,er month in Georgia since 1892 1in.s been so w-arm. The masimuni t,empera.ture for the mont,h hi Georgia is the lligliest whiter temperature on record. Although the extremes were not so marked in Blabnmn and Mississippi the cla.ily excess in tempern.ture during most of January and the first, 30 days of February wa,s over IO", a period of wwnitli quite without an equal. The record of precipitation also is noteworthy. Tlie month was estreiiiely dry, t,he State deficiencies ranging frorii 1.26 inches for t,he Virginia tire& to 3.30 inches for Florida. The smallest amount,s of rain, generally less t h m 1 inch, were received in Florida and along t,lie Gulf a.nd Atlantic coasts, gradually increasing t o over 5 inches at a few places in northern Georgia, Blahama, ant1 the Mississippi mea. The deficiency in rallif~ll M-:is most remarkable in Floridit; of GO stations repnrt'ing. 19 received no rainfall whatever or only a trace, 16 @aces received 0.10 inch or less, and only 5 over half an mch. Tlie nuniber of days wit,li precipitation ranged from only 1 in Florida t,o an average of 8 in Virginih, and i in Ala- Tlie district citine uiitler tlie influence of about 10 niod- mite areas of low and 7 areas of high atmospheric pressure during the month. The sliglit depressioii that moved from Colorado t.o Illinois on the Gth, ttnd the subsequent clisturbanca that moved froni souhhern Terns t,o central Georgia on tlie 9th inaugurated tlie periods of general but moderate rains that last.ed from the 6th to the 12th in the nort, liern portions of the district,. The clepression that moved from soutliern Texas to Louisinna on the Igth, thence to tlie coast of North Carolinit on the ZOt,li, brought rains on the 19th-20th, which were followed by the only severe cold wave that occurred during the month. The lowest atmos heric pressure for the district was generally registereion the morning of the 20th, the niini- mum being 29.64 inches at Hatteras, N. C. Tlie area of high pressure following this tliqturbance, although it W'RS over 3 1 inches in the northwest on the morning of the 20th, and still 31 inches in Kansas on the nionling.of the 21st, clicl not give the highest, pressure for the district; tlie highest pressure was generally re~stered on tlie 16th or l'ith, with the maximum 30.64 inches at ,hJorfolk, V n ., giving a raiiw of 1 inch for the montli. Escep t inElorirla,, the month wa.; also charscterizetl b v con5i(lera,ble cloiidiness and frequent den5e fogs, espe- cially in Georgia. Tlie severe freeze on flie 3Sd antl 23d greatly injurecl vegetrttion, which w:is 111 an atlviincecl stitge nf growth in some sections. At tlie littitude of Atlanta the leaves of rose< ant1 other low rlirul~s were frozen and killed ancl flower buds were ldiglite(1. The peach crop was greatly tlam:tgetl. TEMPERATURE. The temperature was ahove normal over the entire district during February, the escess beine greatest in the northern portion of the Gulf States. -4long tlie entire Atlantic coast line the departures were moderate, and eqpecially so in the estreiiie southern portion of Florida. The State means for Florida and Virainin show an excess of about 4", for South C:trolina an8 Georgia ahout Go, for ALthania So, :md for tlie Mississippi area over 9'. The mean teinperature for the entire district was 53' and the departure +6.2'. The lowest State mean wtis 42' fur Virginia, and the highest 63' for Florida. Since the iiienn temperature for January, 51", was 5" above tlie normal, the first. two nioiitlis of the year IO11 show a marked excess in temperature. Very warm we:tther prevailed at the hginning of the month, with the highest teiiipernt tires for the inoiith on the 3tl :it niany places in North C'itrolina ancl Georgia: n period of niotleratdy cooler weather followed about tlie 10th, which was succee(let1 1 )~- :t second period of pro- nounced high temperat urcs, especially from the 15th to tlie 19th (20th in Florida). A msrlied coltl wave began on the 20th antl lasted for several clays, with tempera- tures below freezing on the niornings of the 27st to 23d, causing much damage to vegetation and crops. During this periotl the lowest ten1 erature in Virginia Lenoir; iu Georgia, 13", at Diamond; in Alabama, 17': at Hamilton; and in South Carolina and the hfississippi area, 20°, a t ninny ,laces, all occurring on tlie mornmg Floiida with freezing weather and killing frosts as far south as De Soto County on the 23d, 24th, and 25th; the line of freezing did not extend so far south on the east coast. The lowest temperature in Florida was 2 3 O on the 23cl at Moho. Subse ueiitly the temperature rose again, was 1l0, at Hot Springs; in Nort P i Carolina, 14O, :tt of the 22tl. The co I d wave overspread the Peninsula of reaching the highest 9 or the month at places in South FEBRUARY, 1911. MONTHLY WEATHER REVIEW. 171 Carolina, Georgia, and ,Wssissippi. The niasiinuni t 2111- perature for the district mas S9", on tlie 20th, a t Malabar, Fla., closely followed by S7O, on the 2d and 2Sth, a t Valdosta, C3a. Tlie highest, temperatures for the month exceeded 80' in all the States in the district, except Viruinia. TLe highest monthly mean temperaturf. was 71.5, at Key West, Fla., and the only other point i t l i ti Fehrnary mean above 70' was Miami, Fla., with 70.2'. The lowest monthly mean teinperature was 36" at Hot, Spring+, T'n., and the only other place with a monthly riiean ldow -No was Lexington, Va., with 3 8 .2 O . The range 111 monthly mean temperatures in the various Sta tes w.ns unu+ually small for tlie season of the pear; in the southern portion of the Gulf States the nieans rangecl niostlg between 55' and GO", hi the northern portion and 111 the Altlnntic State.: from 45' to 55O. PRECIPITATION. As already mentioned, February was characterized by a remarkable deficiency in .precipitation, which was espe- cially noteworthy in Florida, where no less than 1'3 sta- tions received practically no riain, a condition usually associated only with the arid regions of the West. The average recipitation for the district was 2 inches, inclicat- inches over southeastern Alabrima, the whole of Florida, the southern half of Georgia, ~i i d the eastern portions of North and South Carolina. It exceeded 4 inches over very limited areas in northwestern Georgia. northern Ala- bama, and hlississippi. The greatest montlily timount in the district was 6.61 inches, a t noonerille, Miw., closely followed by 5.63 inches, a t Hamilton, Aln., and 5.60 inclies at Lafayette, Ga. A rainfall of 2.50 inches or more in 24 hours occurred a t but one station, namely, Liberty, S. C., 2.S4 inches, on the 11th. Outside of Floriclit, where so many stations receiwd no rain, the smallest monthly to- tal was 0.08 inch a t St. George, (+ti. Tlie rainfall w ' :~ somewha t more evenly distributed in T'irginia, where the deficiency was least. The number of clays with rain aver- aged about G for the district. Scattered showers occui-red in the northern portion of the district on the lst, 3c1, and 4th. The longest period of consecutive days with rain occurred from the 6th to l"h, during which, however, the rainfall w-as mostly light and showeiy. Another general rniii occurred on the 1'3tli-'7Wi, while the last decade WRS very tliy. The following. brief details in regard to the distribution of precipitation in the various States may be given : In Virginia much cloudy, unsettled, and disagreeable weather with frequent light, showers occurred up to the 20th. but, the close of the iiioiitli was fine. Tlie rainfall was less than any previously recorded at, some places in the southenstern portion of North Carolina. In South Carolina the average rainfall, 1.60 inches, is the nest smallest on record for February (smallest average, 0% inch in 1SDS). In Georgia the State average ~7as the third lowest) in 20 years, and the aniounts the least ever recorded for February in the southwestern portion. In Florida tlie month was tlie clryest in the his- tory of the section, the average rainfall for tlie month being only 0.19 inch, or 3.30 below tlie normal. Most of the rain fell on the 9th and 20th. It is rather unusual to find so severe a drought prevailing in aseinitropical locality usually ing B de x ciency of 2.70 inches. The rainfall w\'its untler 2 supplied with copious precipitation. At Key West, for example, the total rain all for the month was 0.01 inch, the lowest recorded for Februai-y. The total amount of rain- fall a t this place since November 1, 1'310, is only 2.18 inches, which is about, 505. inches below the normal. As a consequence of the droughtj many cisterns are diy and rain is seriously needed. The dry weather in central Florida, however, was to some extent beneficial, as it re- tarded the growth of citrus fruits, wliicli were conse- quently not greatly injured by tlie coid weather of the 21st to 26th. The greatest Stiite averages of precipitation occurred in Alabama ant1 Mississippi, where the rainfall was more eT-eiily distributed, a t least in the northern portions. Very light, snow fell in T'irginia on the Gth, l l t h , and IStli, with the largest amount, 2.7 inches (unmelted), a t New Castle. Yery small amounts of snow also fell in western North Crtmlinzt and northern Georgia, niostly on tlie 11th. Tlie largest amount in Nort81i Carolina was 2.5 inches, a t Mount, Siry. and in Georgia, 3 inches, a t Cky ton. RIVER CONDITIONS. Flood stages were not attained in any of the rivers in tlie district during February. Very low stages were regis- tered during the early and latter part of the month, with a nioderate rise between. The mean stages were much below the normal. The 1-adlrin River at Cheraw, for in- stance, was 7.1 feet below nornitil, ant1 the C'ape Fear at Fayetteville was 6.1 feet below nornial. Similar condi- tions prevniled in most of the rivers in the district. In Alabitma, owing to local heavy rains a t the close of the first decade. niodernte freshets occurred in the lower Black Warrior nntl Tonibighee Rivers during part of the second decade. That there has been almost no surface flow of rain water into the rivers is indicated by the rare circumstance that many riveis, such as tlie Chattalioocliee in Georgia, have hecome as clear as mountain streams, though usually they are very muddy. MISCELLANEOUS PHENOMENA. Tlie wind moremeiit n.ns small for 2% winter month, tlie average hourly velocity exceeding 10 i d e s only a t Hat- teras, Atlanta, and Pensacola. The maxinium velocity reported was 60 miles an hour from the south on the 11th a t Pensacola, gales of 40 miles an hour or more occurring a t no other station. Along tlie Gulf coast the prevailing winds were from the south or southetist, and in the inte- rior from the west or southwest. The average number of clear clays wts 12, ranging froin S in Mississippi to 17 in Florida; the average number of partly cloucly clays was S, and of cloudy days S. Dense fog prevailed a t a large number of stations, especially in Georgia, occurring on 7 days at Atlanta, 5 days a t Augusta, 11 days a t Macon, 5 a t Savannah, and S a t Thomasville. Thunclerstorms oc- curred at many stations in Alabama and Georgia on the night of the 3d-4th. During the thunderstorm of that date a t Mont, gonieiy, Ala., a severe squall struck Clover- dale, a suburban residence section about 13 miles from the Weather Bureau office, where, however, the wind only attained a niaxinium velocity of 23 miles. At Cloverdale chimneys were blown clown, many trees uprooted, some porches daniaged, and a few persons were slightly injured. 172 MONTHLY WEATHER REVIEW.
