MARCH, 1911. MONTHLY WEATHER REVIEW. 425 CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA FOR MARCH, 1911. DISTRICT NO. 9, COLORADO VALLEY. FBEDEEICK H. BRANDENBUBO, District Editor. GENERAL SUMMARY. The mean temperature throughout the district was material1 higher than the normal, but not so high as that of Jarch a year ago, which month it resembled in respect to the slight variability of temperature from day to day. It was ver favorable as regards the amount severe conditions. The storms were about the average as regards number and occurred at short and regular intervals. Everything considered, the conditions were fine for March. . and hstribution of t I e precipitation and the lack of any TEMPERATURE. The mean of the 140 stations reporting was 48.3', or 3.2' above the normal. By subdivisions the means and departures were: Western Wyoming, 30.7', + 1.9O; western Colorado 36.0°, +3.3'; eastern Utah, 43.1', +3.5'; western hew Mexico, 49.2', +4.8'; Arizona, 57.3', +2.9'; and southeastern Nevada, 54.2'. The highest monthly mean was 69.4', at Mohawk Summit, Anz., and the lowest, 16.4', at Corona, Colo. In the extreme southwestern part of the district, in the vicinity of the Gulf of Califorma and in southeastern Nevada, 9 were cooler than the normal, while in the rest of Or lo the dT istrict only 3 or 4 days were relatively cool. With one exception the deficiencies were small. This is rather remarkable, as uniformit in the mean ten1 era- district, is not common to March. By subdivisions, the extremes were: Western Wyoming, 62' and -16'; western Colorado, 73' and -12'; eastern Utah, 86' and -6'; western New Mexico, 83' and 2'; Arizona, 99' and 15'; and southeastern Nevada, 93' and 22'. ture, especially in the central adnorthern parts o lp the PRECIPITATION. The average for the 187 stations reporting was 1.22 inches, or 0.04 inch below the normal. The average for March, 1910, was 0.56 inch. By watersheds, the means and departures were: Green, 0.73, -0.69; Grand, 2.00, +0.11; San Juan, 2.53, +0.51; Little Colorado, 1.33, +0.50; Gila, 0.81, -0.11; Mimbres, 0.91, +0.30; and lower Colorado, 0.96, - 0.07 inch. The greatest monthly precipitation was 6.36 inches, at Corona Colo., while there was none at Hermanea and Pratt, k. Mex., and Naco, Ariz. The rains of March 3-5, in Arizona, caused moderate floods in the Verde and Salt Rivers on the 6th, 7th, and 8th. High water also occurred in the Muddy River, in southeastern Nevada, on the 10th: The dam- age by these freshets consisted principally in making the streams unfordable and thus interrupting traffic. The average number of days with 0.01 inch or more of pre- cipitation was 3 in western Wyoming, 9 in western Colo- rado, 5 in eastern Utah, 4 in western New Mexico, 4 in Arizona, 5 in southeastern Nevada, and for the dlstrict as a whole 6 days. MISCELLANEOUS. The sunshine was much below the average in northern Arizona, slightly below in southern Arizona, and very close to the average in the northern half of the district. Grand Junction reported 67, Dura o 69, Fla tsfE 62, The mean relative hun1iht.y was somewhat higher than the normal. The followin values were reported: Grand Junction 56, Durango 60,kagstaff 70, Phoenix 55, and Yuma 46 per cent. Phoenix 77, and Yuma 78 per cent Y o the possi r le. EXTRACTS FROM SECTION SNOWFALL BULLETINS. Wealmw W onting.--Over much of the watershed of the Green River the de th otsnow is somewhat deficient, and it is probable that the Green %Liver in this State will carry lese water than usual dur' the commg summer. There is a good quantity of snow in the Sim%dre Mountains, assuring a good supply of water for the Snake River of Southern W oming, a tributary of the Green River. Weateni dZorado.-The distribution was irregular over the region drained by the Grand. In Summit County, dramed by the Blue, an im ortant tributary, there was a marked deficiency of snowfall, while in Eagle County and eastern part of Garfield County an excess was noted. The Gunnison watershed had more than the normal snowfall during March, and the same is true of the San Juan watershed, but the op osite is true of the Yam a and White. #he month waa warmer Jan the normal, and there was considerable melting, but the run-off due to high temperatures was much less than during the corresponding month laat year. Comparing the depths on the round at the end of the month with the de ths on the correspondin iate last year, the re orb make a ver favora%le showing. In the fofiowing comparimns $e average depd on March 31 of this ear is given first: Grand, 26 and 14 inches; Gun- nison, 29 and 16 incies; Yam a and White, 19 and 9 inches; and San Juan and Dolores, 16 and 8 incRes. In eneral the snow is well packed. &tern Utd.--In the re 'on drainefby the Green and Colorado an averqe amount of snow fefdurin March. In general the amount of snow in the mountains is greater &an on the correspondin date last year, but not above the average, though it is well packe! and will probably last a lon time. The conaensus of opinion is that a normal suvly of water wifi be available during the comin seaaon. eatern Nezu Memh-Over the watershed of the 8an Juan and in the southwestern part of the Territor the reci itation was principally in the form of rain. The soil is well fillex wit{ moisture, but the snow has melted except on the higher mountains. The streams are carry- in good volumes of water. Southeastern Nevudu.-The precipitation during March was up to the average, or perhaps a little greater. The winter's snowfall in the higher districts with the normal amount of rain during the coming s ring and bummer will be sufficient to feed the springs supplying the &w in the Muddy River. iQrito?ia.-The snowfall of the month was greatly deficient, and de- cidedl less than that of March last ear, except over the up er Gila wateKed. The snow at 7,000 feet eLvation dlsa peared on $e 13th; at 8,OOO feet on the 21st; at 8,500 feet on the 2581, and at 9,OOO feet about the 30th. A t higher altitudes the snow is well packed and is melting slowly. 430 16.4 38.211 3 8 4 26.4 44.6 MONTHLY WEATHER REVIEW. TABLE l.--Climatolog.ical data for March, 1911.
