Weather Bureau Circular Letters

Dr. F.W. Reicheldorfer, Chief of the Bureau

Publication History

On August 19, 1940, F. W. Reicheldorfer, Chief of the Bureau, signed an Administrative Circular declaring that all communications given a wide distribution will be designated "Circular Letters." These Letters may contain announcemments of certain events or general information to Bureau personnel that may be of a temporary nature. Circular Letters are numbered serially followed by a dash and the last two numerals of the calendar year of issue. Circular Letters carried the signature of the Chief or Acting Chief of the Bureau and were dispersed to all first-order stations.

Scope of coverage

The NOAA Central Library maintains the collection of Circular Letters from August 19, 1940 through incomplete issues of 1966. Circular Letters began July 1, 1940, however, they were not numbered. Arbitrary numbers were assigned to certain memoranda issued during July 1940. An Alphabetical Index to Circular Letters (1940-1952) is included as a finding aide. This index is useful in determining the location of instructions issed as Circular Letters. Only Circular Letters that were still in effect as of January 1, 1953 are included in this index. After 1953, each year includes a Table of Contents of Circular Letters still in effect.
